How to convert/upload AVI Videos to iTunes?

How to convert and import AVI videos to iTunes successfully? I have some TV Show episodes that I downloaded and I want to add them onto my iTunes library. The format of the videos is AVI and how can I convert the file to a .MOV or .MP4 file? I tried renaming the extension and adding it to iTunes but nothing happened. P.S. I'm planning to add them to my iPod.
